When Bad Controls Ruin A Good Game

When Bad Controls Ruin A Good Game

April 23, 2026 · Marek Kowalczyk

I've abandoned genuinely clever games because the controls fought me. On a phone, a design that ignores how fingers actually work is a design that loses players.

Watch for cramped buttons near the screen edges, tiny drag targets, and forced tilt with no alternative. Turbo Dust Rally gets this right by letting you choose your input scheme.

When you review a game for yourself, spend the first ten minutes just on how it feels to move. If you're fighting the interface before you fight the enemies, that's a red flag.

Good controls disappear. You stop noticing them and start noticing the game. That's the bar I hold every mobile title to.
